Owner:
Town of Islesboro, Library, Main Road, Islesboro, Maine 04848
Remarks:
The library flagpole was erected in memory of Sgt. Guy Malcolm Yeaton, Islesboro's only World War I fatality and possibly replaces an earlier flagpole located at this site. The town raised $4,500 to erect a monument for Sgt. Yeaton and all the Island men who served overseas. The body of Sgt. Yeaton is buried on the library's north lawn near the sculpture. Nearby plaques record the names of men who served in the Civil War and World War I. IAS files contain a related excerpt from John Pendleton Farrow's "History of Islesboro," Bangor: Thomas W. Burr, 1893.
Conflicting dates for the flagpole are given by reporting sources. The flagpole (perhaps original flagpole) appears to be that illustrated in Farrow's "History of Iselsboro," published in 1893; however, SOS! survey report lists 1918 as dedication date and also says funds raised between 1921 and 1922 for erection of the monument.
