Description:
Four intersecting panels with African-based symbols, commemorating sixteen local citizens and their qualities. The panels are painted in symbolic colors, including: red for energy; blue for spirituality; yellow for joy and growth; and black, which contains all colors and reflects the greater community. Cutout images on panels are metaphors: the water bird is a spiritual messenger and alludes to Stoner Hill's river boundary; the serpent and moon are symbols of change; the spider connotes industry and connection; the tree is for life. The overhead arch carries the neighborhood name "STONER HILL." Sculpture is mounted upon a concrete base imprinted with handprints of those it commemorates, framed by bricks inscribed with their names and associated qualities, including: Leadership, Wisdom, Hope, Virtue, Love, Courage, Faith, and Creativity.

Remarks:
Sculpture commemorates sixteen "living heroes" of the Stoner Hill neighborhood and the values that they have brought to the community. Names are categorized in rows of brick on the base as follows: Wisdom: Bessie Smith, Howard Allen, Cleophus Banks, and Louise Johnson; Courage: Annie Galloway, Robert Williams, Shirley Wills, and Willis Williams; Faith and leadership: Frank Sykes, Hearese Johnson, Edith Webb, and Joe Wills; Creativity: Peggy Williams, Reverend Earnest Woodson, Thomas Walker, and Paul Cooks. Those commemorated are teachers, church leaders, Action Group Members, former elected officials, workers for and leaders of Habitat for Humanity, Caddo Community Action Agency, the Neighborhood Assistance Team.
Sculpture was made possible through the Community Cultural Plan administered by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council, with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts Locals Program, the Louisiana State Arts Council, the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture,Recreation and Tourism and the City of Shreveport. Sculpture was created by the Pyramid Group (consisting of Nevelyn Brown, Tama Nathan, and Lucille Reed), which coordinated with the Stoner Hill Neighborhood Action Group. The Stoner Hill Neighborhood Action Group initially wanted to pay homage to the area's founding fathers, but changed to celebrate present day citizens who are role models known by younger generations. Fabricator was OWC, of Minden, Louisiana, and engraver was Central Monument Company.
Nearby plaque reads: STONER HILL HEROES/(copyright symbol) 1996/Pyramid Group/Nevelyn Brown.Tama Nathan.Lucille Reed/"From the Collection of/Shreveport Regional Arts Council/Commissioned Through the City of Shreveport/and the/National Endowment for the Arts."
