Description:
A mosaic tablet containing an allegorical personification of the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity. In the center is a majestic angel, representing Hope, with her wings extended, her head elevated, and her gaze turned heavenward. In her hands she holds a scroll bearing a Greek inscription and above the tip of each wing is a wreath bearing an inscription.
To the proper right of the angel, is a broken Ionic column which is next to a gracefully modeled figure of a seated woman who represents the virtue of Faith. She holds a pen in her proper right hand ready to inscribe the words of truth, while nearby stands a light, in the form of an early Christian lamp, bearing the monogram of Christ, and portraying symbolically the light of the Holy Spirit. Behind her is the youthful figure of St. John the Baptist in proper right profile. He holds a cross over her head with his proper right hand. From the cross a ribbon is draped bearing an inscription.
To the proper left of the angel of Hope, is a seated female in proper left profile representing Charity. She is wrapped in deep meditation, gazing upon a shield held in the proper right hand of a youthful angel in proper right profile. In the shield she sees reflected the orphan and widow receiving the alms and succor of the charitable.

Remarks:
Title supplied by Inventory cataloger.
The mosaic tablet is dedicated to Sylvester Willard, M. D. (1799-1886) and Jane Frances Case Willard (1830-1890), by their daughters. Mr. Willard served as secretary of the Board of Trustees for the Auburn Theological Seminary for 40 years. The Willard Chapel, where the tablet is located, was originally an Auburn Theological Seminary building, owned by the Presbyterian Church from 1894 to 1957. It was purchased by the Seventh Day Adventist Church in 1957, which used it for services until 1988 when the chapel was purchased by Michael Dwyer, an antiques dealer. Since 1990 Willard Chapel has been administered by the Community Preservation Committee. The chapel was designed by Tiffany & Company. The artist, a Tiffany & Company designer, completed and installed the tablet in 1894. IAS files contain an excerpt transcribed from the Auburn Bulletin, Oct. 25, 1894.
