Description:
An abstract sculpture consisting of an inverted pyramid made of highly polished black granite containing white etchings on each of its sides remembering the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and recognizing those who aided the Jews. The etching on panel one depicts Janusz Korczak leading a group of Jewish orphans from the Warsaw Ghetto to death in the gas chambers of the Treblinka Concentration Camp. A Nazi SS guard stands in the background. Korczak is bearded and cradles a young child in his proper left arm as other children surround him and hold on to his coat.
Panel two shows the biblical burning bush with barbed wire across the fire. Panel three contains the names of Raoul Wallenberg, Oskar Schindler and Maximillian Kolbe, three Christians who saved Jewish lives during the Holocaust. The inverted pyramid is mounted on a three-sided base containing etched inscriptions. It is set in a larger three-sided base filled with plantings. The sculpture and its base are surrounded by three triangular-shaped meditation benches.

Remarks:
The sculpture was installed by the Holocaust Memorial Committee and the leadership of Dr. Stanley Robbin as a memorial to the six million Jews who were victims of Nazi persecution and the Christian heroes who tried to save them. Dr. Henry Goldszmit, depicted on panel one, is better known by his pen name, Janusz Korczak. Korczak was a Jewish physician, educator and author of books for children, who turned down opportunities to save his own life, and instead, marched to the gas chambers at Treblinka with orphans of the Warsaw Ghetto. He is also known as the "King of Children."
The structural part of the sculpture was designed by architect Monte Leeper. The pictorial part of the sculpture, consisting of the etchings and inscriptions, was designed by Stanley Robbin. The sculpture was built by Haskel Construction of Mount Vernon, New York. IAS files contain the dedication booklet, "Remembrance: Holocaust Memorial Monument," Kennedy Plaza, Long Beach, Long Island, New York, published by the Holocaust Memorial Committee of Long Island, which contains further information about Korczak, Wallenberg, Schindler and Kolbe. IAS files also contain articles from Poland Now 353 (1988): pg. 24-25; Independent Voice (Long Beach, Long Island, NY), Oct. 1, 1987, pg. 1 and 8, and Oct. 6, 1988; and Long Island Journal, Oct. 1, 1987.
