    Description: 
    Abstract sculpture depicting, according to the artist, "the bust of a man burdened with the weight of an abstract cross, reaching toward the cross of his church, his left hand extended as though drawing others into a sweeping motion." The sculpture is mounted upon a tall, tapered base of unpolished, slate-like tiles.

    Remarks: 
    Sculpture commemorates Charles "Charlie" P. Taft II, son of President William Howard Taft, one of the founders of the World Council of Churches, and a mayor of Cincinnati from 1955 to 1957. He was an active member of Christ Church, where he served in the church's vestry for fifty years. Mr. Taft was also a councilman for a long period and was nicknamed "Mr. Cincinnati." IAS file contains a related article from the Downtowner (Ohio), Dec. 20, 1988, which discusses the dedication. IAS files also contain a related article from The Cincinnati Enquirer, June 5, 1991. Unpublished archival materials are available at the Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati, Ohio).
