(On northwest side:) Capt. J0HN C. SYMMES a Native of New Jersey, died May 1829 Aged 49 yrs & 6 months (On southwest side:) Capt. John Cleves Symmes entered the Army of the US as an Ensign in the year of 1802. He afterward rose to the rank of Captain, and performed daring feats of Bravery in the Battles of Lundy's Lane and sortie from Fort Erie
(On northeast side:) Capt. John Cleves Symmes as a Philosopherm and the originator of 'Symmes Theory of Concentric Spheres and Polar voids." He contended that the Earth is hollow and habitable within."
(On southeast side:) This monument was erected in the mid 1840s by Americus Symmes to mark the grave site of his father, Captain John Cleves Symmes. This restoration is a Bicentennial Gift to the city of Hamilton from Historic Hamilton Incorporated. Dedicated March 13, 1991 (list of funders)

Remarks:
The monument is placed in a two acre park and is enclosed by a six foot high iron fence. The bronze plaques and base are not original to the monument.
