Remarks:
In 1916, Denver banker John Mitchell donated $35,000 to honor his friend, Dennis Sullivan, with the installation of two gateway sculptures and a fountain that would mark the entrance to City Park at East Colfax Avenue. Sculptor Leo Lentelli created plaster models of the sculptures in his Hoboken, New Jersey studio. From these models, molds were made and transported to Denver where they were installed around steel armatures erected atop forty foot pylons. Cast stone was then poured around the armature. For additional information see Rocky Mountain News, Sept. 26, 1994 and the Denver Post, April 23, 1997, pg. 2B.
