Struthers "was among the first to enroll his name amid the First Regiment New York Voluneteers" for the Mexican War in 1846. He was originally buried in Potters's Field, but men of Harring Guard moved his body to Green-Wood Cemetery and had this monument built to honor his service. He was interred on Aug. 31, 1853.
