Remarks:
James T. Stewart moved to Lansdowne in 1893 and played a leadership role in securing land and developing the playground, originally called Lansdowne Playground, but renamed Stewart Field in his honor in April 1929. Stewart was president and superintendent of the Caledonia Mills in Clifton Heights and later served as county controller and county treasurer. He served as burgess of the Borough of Lansdowne for 25 years and as President of the Lansdowne Fire Company for 20 years.
In 1998, the memorial was restored as part of the Lansdowne Monument Project. The base was repainted; the bronze plaque cleaned and waxed. The flagpole was repainted and the flag raising mechanism replaced. The memorial was rededicated Nov. 7, 1998.
