Each plaque: approx. 38 x 20 x 3/4 in.; Each pier: approx. 62 x 24 x 24 in. Inscription:  (On front face of south pier, raised:) SMITH GATEWAY/ERECTED BY THE LATE FLORA E. SMITH/IN MEMORY OF HER FATHER/FREDERICK MALCOLM SMITH/CO. O 26TH REG'T C. V. INF/AND THE FOLLOWING CITIZENS OF THE/TOWN OF EAST LYME/WHO ALSO VOLUNTEERED FOR SERVICE/IN THE CIVIL WAR/1861 1865/ARMY (followed by two columns of names) key - Died for the Union Buried Here Colored (On front face of north pier is the same heading with two additional columns of names of Army veterans) (Below these columns:) NAVY (followed by two names and a repeat of the key found on the first pier) unsigned Description:  Two granite piers at main entrance to Union Cemetery. A bronze plaque with lettering is on the front of each pier. The plaques are embellished at the top with the shield of the United States flanked by laurel sprays. The bases and shafts of the piers are rough finished. The tops are smooth.
