Remarks:
Erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans to commemorative those former servants who remained faithful during the Civil War. Heyward Shepherd was a black freedman who was killed defending Harper's Ferry during John Brown's raid. The inscription was written by Matthew Page Andrews. The sculpture was restored in 1974 and moved to storage between 1975 and 1981, because of controversy between NAACP and the Daugthers of the Confederacy. IAS files contain copy of List of Classified Structures report (LCS 03866).
