The sculpture cost $10,000. It was installed by Mrs. O.J. Pond in memory of Olen J. Pond and the veterans of World War I. The memorial originally consisted of the central sculpture flanked by two drinking fountains. The female figure is called "Memory." A young woman from Indianapolis, Indiana was the model for the figure. The memorial was dedicated as a part of Armistice Day ceremonies, November 11, 1930. The figure's head was taken by vandals around 1990. IAS files contain an excerpt from "Monuments, Plaques & Markers," 1963; and articles from the Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne, IN), Nov. 11, 1930; and July 15, 1991.
