    Remarks:
The sculpture was designed for the garden at the Augusta-Richmond County Museum in honor the Travers Paine Family who lost their young daughter, Alice, to a crippling disease called metachromatic leudodystorphy in 1980. The garden is now called the Alice Paine Memorial Garden Center. The sculpture was placed by Augusta friends of the young parents. Shara Baker Overstreet, who provided the sculpture concept, headed the committee which chose the artist and secured funding. According to the artist, "This sculpture carries a message of love, tenderness, self-sacrifice and joy. It speaks of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity and of the special relationship between mother and daughter. The child makes the sign of the cross, traditional symbol of suffering and redemption, as her adoring mother holds her. Both radiate joy and celebrate life."
The base was produced by Joe Fendley, Sr. of the Elberton Granite Finishing Corporation. The lettering for the base was designed by Garland Taylor of Macon, Georgia, and executed by Joy Hart. Mengel Art Foundry of Marietta, Georgia cast the sculpture. IAS files contain remarks by the artist prepared for the dedication ceremony on July 7, 1981 and a card containing the artist's statement from Nov. 1979.
