Remarks:
Gift of the American Federation of Musicians. Cost $5,000. This monument commemorates Owen Miller (d. 1919) and Otto Ostendorf (d. 1922), both of whom were members of the St. Louis Symphony and various St. Louis theater orchestras. Miller and Ostendorf were also officers of the American Federation of Musicians. At the dedication of the monument in May 1925, a 150-piece band gave a concert.
IAS files contain copies from unpublished 1969 mayor's report "Public Art - St. Louis" and Loughlin & Anderson's book "Forest Park," which give slightly different dates for the dedication. The mayor's report lists the dedication date as May 31, 1925, while Loughlin & Anderson's book reports it as May 30, 1925. The mayor's report also mentions that the monument had been hit by a car, moving it 2 ft. off its foundation, and would need to be dismantled, reset, and pointed. IAS files also contain copies of articles from St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Feb. 4, 1979; St. Louis Post-Dispatch March 15, 1925; and St. Louis Facts - A Municipal Record 1 (Sept.-Oct. 1924).
