    Remarks:
The sculpture honors David Owen Dodd, Colonel J. Ed Murray, and the Confederate soldiers from Arkansas who served during the Civil War. The sculpture was paid for by the David Owen Dodd chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Fundraising efforts for the sculpture began in 1907. Seventeen-year-old Dodd was hanged for being a spy on January 8, 1864, by General Frederick Steele, the Union Army commander of Arkansas. Dodd was caught transporting a telegraph code that was a partial description of the military strength of the federal forces in Little Rock. According to popular legend, after the rope had been adjusted around Dodd's neck, he was given the chance to reveal the names of those who aided him in obtaining the information, and thus save his own life, but he refused to do so. He has become known as the "Nathan Hale of Arkansas." J. Ed Murray was Colonel of the 5th Arkansas Regiment and was killed at the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864 at the age of 21 years.
