Description:
Monument consists of a central element flanked by rounded seating areas. The central element is a decorative pedestal topped by a female figure of Hope. She wears a classical-style gown and holds her proper left hand to her chest. She leans on an anchor with her proper right hand. Decorative elements on the pedestal include Romanesque columns and a Gothic arch set over an inscription tablet. The flanking seating areas have identical laurel wreath and torch designs. A female winged angel in flowing garb is seated on the right exedra.

Remarks:
The monument cost $6,000. The figure of Hope was made by James Sharkey. The base for the monument was built by the Cemetery company. IAS files contain excerpt from "Wilmington, North Carolina: An Architectural and Historical Portrait," by Tony P. Wrenn (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 1984), which gives the installation date as June 1883. SOS! survey gives date as June 1885.
