(On brass plaque:) JAMES MONROE/BORN IN WESTMORELAND COUNTY 28TH APRIL 1758./DIED IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK 4TH JULY 1831/BY ORDER OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY/HIS REMAINS WERE REMOVED TO THIS CEMETERY 5TH JULY 1858./AS AN EVIDENCE OF THE AFFECTION OF VIRGINIA/FOR HER GOOD AND HONORED SON Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    A wrought iron structure in elaborate high Victorian gothic style surrounds the tomb of President James Monroe. A small access opening is incorporated into the design of the west facade of the structure. A Lancet-arched screen is used on all four facades. A central arch uses a form of rose window tracery at the top with three round arched openings below. The roof is vaulted with ribbing and tracery. Iron cresting runs along the top of the screen. The structure, which is painted black, stands on a granite base. The granite tomb rests inside.

    Remarks: 
    The structure was commissioned when Monroe's body was removed from New York City to Richmond Virginia in 1859. Cost of the structure was $1,682. The structure was fabricated in Philadelphia. IAS files contain copy of related Historic American Buildings Survey, May 1969; and City of Richmond Sculpture Survey. IAS files also contain article from Richmond Times-Dispatch, Sept. 9, 1923; and designer's sketch, contracts and correspondence.
