    Description: 
    A bronze relief plaque affixed to the front of a granite monument that is decorated at each side with a granite cross. In the center of the relief plaque is an oval bust-length portrait of Rev. J. E. Dubois shown in high relief. Rev. Dubois wears a clerical collar under a monsignor's robe with a stand-up collar and five small buttons starting at the top. He has a small mustache and wears spectacles. Palm fronds rise to the mid-point of the oval's exterior on each side and are fastened together by a bow at center bottom. The monument is placed atop a tapered base and a wide platform.

    Remarks: 
    Joseph Eugene Dubois was born in Bristol, New Hampshire in 1859, the son of Canadian immigrants. He studied in Quebec and in 1888 was ordained a priest in Nicolet, Quebec. He served in Canada from 1888 to 1893. He returned to New Hampshire as a missionary priest serving a number of parishes before arriving at the French-Canadian parish of Sacred Heart. He served there from 1904 until his death in 1923. The monument was dedicated on Labor Day in 1925. The monument also memorializes the Rev. Joseph J. Monge, the founding pastor of Sacred Heart Parish who served from 1891 until 1904. IAS files contain articles from the Laconia Democrat, June 1, 1923; and Sept. 11, 1925; and The News and Critic (Laconia, New Hampshire), Sept. 16, 1925. IAS files contain an excerpt from David Ruell's typescript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire," Concord, New Hampshire: New Hampshire Historical Society, 1980, pg. 205-206.
