Remarks:
Donated via a $12,0000 bequest by Augustus Maschmeyer to erect a memorial to his first wife, Jessie Tennille Maschmeyer. Mr. Maschmeyer's will left the design entirely up to the sculptor, but he did mention how fond Mrs. Maschmeyer had been of birds. IAS files contain copies of articles from St. Louis Globe-Democrat, June 19, 1931, and St. Louis Post-Dispatch, May 10, 1959, both of which discuss the $12,000 bequest for the memorial, the creation of the sculpture, and the appropriateness of the subject matter; and St. Louis Globe-Democrat, April 19, 1932, which discusses the informal dedication of the sculpture.
