    Description: 
    The sculpture is a wall mural paying homage to Cuban hero Jose Marti's legacy of freedom over political oppression. It consisting of over ninety marble blocks, each carved with his rallying call "SEMBRAR" in large letters. There are twenty-one smaller blocks which project intermittently from the mural. On the right side of the wall, a large piece of stainless steel, representing a sword, projects and rises above the mural to come to a sharp point. On the lower left side of the mural are three iron rings, two of which are linked. The mural is flanked by a fountain and has a planter before it.

    Remarks: 
    This sculpture of Cuban freedom fighter Jose Marti (1853-1895) was commissioned by the Miami Arts in Public Places Committee (by July 1983 Resolution #83-652) at a cost of $26,000. According to the artist, the linked circles symbolize Marti's legacy of triumph of liberty over political bondage. The sword symbolizes the force that is sometimes needed for freedom. IAS files contain newspaper articles from The Miami Herald, Oct. 28, 1983, sect. D, with discussion of dedication; the Community Newspaper, March 13, 1995, pg. 7; a copy of the artist's agreement of Aug. 4, 1983; correspondence of Sept. 27, 1983 regarding the installation of the piece.
