    Description: 
    This monument to Lowell's Civil War dead consists of a granite obelisk adorned with two bronze medallions --one depicting the seal for the State of Massachusetts and the other depicting the seal for the City of Lowell. Beneath the obelisk is a granite base with four projections and inscriptions commemorating Luther C. Ladd and Addison O. Whitney who died during battle in Baltimore on April 19, 1861. Another plaque commemorates Charles A. Taylor who was the first to die in the Baltimore battle on April 19, 1861.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was designed by Woodstock and Meecham and was fabricated by Runels, Clough, and Company at cost of about $4,500. The state treasury provided half the sum and the City of Lowell appropriated a similar amount. IAS files contain a copy of the Lowell Cultural Resources Inventory form dated May 1979.
