    Description: 
    Granite fountain with concrete lion head spouts. A round basin encircles the tall rectangular center. Plaques are on east and west sides of rectangular center, above basin.

    Remarks: 
    Gift of the National Humane Alliance and the school children of Camden, SC. Richard Kirkland was a soldier during the Civil War in the 2nd South Carolina infantry. After a battle in Fredericksburg, he left his Confederate post to give water to wounded Union soldiers, at great personal risk. IAS files contain citations to related materials: "Historic Camden" part II, by Thomas Kirkland and Robert Kennedy and "Richard Kirkland CSA" compiled by C.D. Kershaw at the request of the John D. Kennedy Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, published by Wacker, Evans & Cogwell, and additional background information.
