    Description: 
    17,000 plus works, many individually titled, within a yard environment. The setting includes paintings on wood, sandstone carvings, collected junk and assembled found objects, including rusted car parts, furniture, appliances, quilts, tablecloths, scarves, clothes, boots, cola cans, and plastic milk jugs. The assemblage of materials references social and ecological concerns and the African-American community. Subjects include Martin Luther King, Michael Jackson, the Persian Gulf War, slavery, racism, the Bible, generational conflicts, crack addiction, and welfare mothers.

    Remarks: 
    The artist began the work in 1979, after the death of his sister's two children in a fire. At time of SOS! survey in 1993, the work was still ongoing, although airport construction threatened the removal of the pieces. IAS files contain articles from Artforum, April 1992, pg. 80; Folk Art Messenger, Spring 1993, pg. 1, 3; Art Papers, March/April 1993, pg. 24-26; and a Birmingham Post-Herald article from 1993. IAS files also contain clipping from Washington Post, Feb. 6, 1997, B-8.
