The memorial gate commemorates Chauncey Hurlbut (1803-1885), member of the Detroit Board of Water Commissioners, who left a bequest for beautifying Waterworks Park. A bust of Hurlbut, now missing, originally crowned a tall pedestal placed in the central terrace opening.
