    Description: 
    A small granite shaft is adorned at the top with a recessed square containing a relief of the Temple of Bel in Nippur, Babylonia where Haynes distinguished himself as an archaeologist and explorer.

    Remarks: 
    The memorial honors archaeologist John Henry Haynes, who between 1898 and 1900 discovered the "library" in the ruins of the Temple of Bel in Nippur, Babylonia. The memorial is a copy of the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser who ruled Babylonia about 850 B.C. For additional information see The Transcript (North Adams, MA), Dec. 5, 1913.
