    Remarks:
The sculpture is a memorial to four Georgia poets in recognition of their poetic gifts and their loyalty to the "Southland." It was given to the City of Augusta by Anna Russell Cole of Nashville, who had resided in Augusta at one time. The poets honored are: James Ryder Randall, whose patriotic poem "My Maryland," became an anthem for the Confederacy during the Civil War; Father Ryan, who offered spiritual guidance to Southern soldiers, and composed "The Conquered Banner," which was set to music taken from a Gregorian hymn; Paul Hayne, who devoted his life to a career in poetry; and Sidney Lanier, a poet with national rather than regional alliances who is associated with the "New South."
