Description:
This memorial to Curtis Guild consists of a set of twenty-two granite steps topped by two limestone gateposts. The right gatepost is adorned with a profile bust relief of Curtis Guild and the left gatepost is adorned with a relief of a hand holding a sword and a coat of arms relief featuring a Native American with a bow in his proper right hand. Ornamental iron railings line the sides of the steps. A new railing has been added to the center of the steps. The foot of the steps is flanked by two street lamps.

Remarks:
The steps serve as a memorial to Curtis Guild, Jr. (1860-1915) Governor of Massachusetts from 1906-1909 and Ambassador to Russia from 1910-1913. The steps were designed by Cram and Ferguson. The relief of Curtis Guild was created by Richard H. Recchia. IAS files contain a copy of the Condition Survey of Boston Sculpture form dated Nov. 2, 1979 and excerpts from the City of Boston, "Art Department Reports," 1899-1925.
