Goddard, a former graduate student and professor at Clark University, was a pioneer in the engineering and testing of rockets and rocket propulsion. The memorial was sponsored by an appropriation of $150,000 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and was approved by the U.S. Congress. The bronze commemorative plaque on a nearby marker reads: ROBERT/HUTCHINGS/GODDARD/1882-1945/"we have/touched the/stars he/reached for..."/-Charles A./Lindbergh. IAS image files contain only an image of the nearby marker and not the sculpture itself. IAS files contain a copy of the City of Worcester Parks and Recreation Department / Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C "Monuments" questionnaire dated Oct. 10, 1986.
