Remarks:
A memorial to President James A. Garfield created by black troops of the Ninth and Tenth United States Cavalry, also known as the "Buffalo Soldiers," who were stationed nearby at the Camp at Bonita Canyon. President Garfield had commanded black troops during the Civil War. The monument is also said to honor Henry O. Flipper, as the inscription "H. O. Flipper" appears several times. Flipper was the first black graduate of West Point and the Army's first black officer. By 1920, the monument was deteriorating, and local people were taking the stones for personal use. Sixty engraved blocks from the monument were preserved and later incorporated into the "Faraway Ranch Chimney" (see IAS record AZ000677). IAS files contain excerpts from an archaeological survey of the Buffalo Soldiers camp at Bonita Canyon from 1990 and from the Cochise County Quarterly, vol. 18, no. 1, Spring 1988.
