Description:
A memorial to George Eastman featuring a cylinder with two bas-relief figures. On one side, the figure of a nude woman in profile is floating, holding in both hands the flame of Aspiration. On the opposite side is a crouching male representing Science, on which Eastman's work in photography was based. The memorial is set in a round sunken plaza, raised on a circular step. Eastman's ashes are placed in a copper box beneath the sculpture.

Remarks:
The memorial was erected by the Eastman Kodak Company, and commemorates its founder, George Eastman (1854-1932). The memorial was designed by Ralph W. Walker, and the relief figures were carved by Leo Friedlander. IAS files contain a copy of Rochester's Public Art Catalog Form for the memorial and an excerpt "The Eastman Memorial," which discusses the dedication ceremony.
