Remarks:
Major Arza M. Goodspeed of West Virginia commanded a brigade during the Vicksburg campaign. He was killed in battle. According to the American Monuments and Outdoor Sculpture Database, the monument was erected by the State of West Virginia in 1922 as its state memorial. The monument is on the National Park Service List of Classified Structures (LCS no. 03316). IAS files contain a copy of the LCS report form. Cost of bust and four bronze tablets $7,500, paid through $6,000 appropriation.
