The sculpture was a gift of the 1984-85 Student Government Association. The sculpture was inspired by the tombs of the Scaligeri, a Gothic monument that stands on a small square in Verona, and by the Italian "Con Grande" monument located in Verona. Con Grande della Scalla was a thirteenth century ruler of Verona, a Ghibelline who, in 1318, became Captain General of the Ghibelline League.
