Description:  A male figure dressed in thirteenth-century Italian military attire is astride a horse caught in the heat of battle. The figure appears calm while his horse struggles to remain standing. Subject:  Homage -- Con Grande della Scala Equestrian Figure male -- Full length Ethnic -- Italian Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- New York -- Hempstead Sculpture Owner:  Administered by Hofstra University, Hofstra Museum, Hempstead, New York 11550 Located Hofstra University, Patio west of Student Center, Hempstead, New York 11550 Provenance:  Formerly in the collection of Ochsner, Alton, Dr., Metairie, Louisiana Remarks:  The sculpture was a gift of the 1984-85 Student Government Association. The sculpture was inspired by the tombs of the Scaligeri, a Gothic monument that stands on a small square in Verona, and by the Italian "Con Grande" monument located in Verona. Con Grande della Scalla was a thirteenth century ruler of Verona, a Ghibelline who, in 1318, became Captain General of the Ghibelline League.
