Remarks:
Commissioned by Captain Hiram Chapman for $2,500 before he died. Captain Chapman helped ferry runaway slaves to Canada. The birch tree symbolizes life; the anchor, safe harbor; and the log cabin (suggested by Chapman's wife Maria), the couple's pioneering spirit.
