Remarks:
The redesigned fountain sculpture was the 1976 winner of the Urban Design Commission award for excellence.
The fountain's sculpture was created by Steffen Thomas around 1975 or 1976. The basin predates the sculpture and was originally part of a memorial fountain to commemorate the founders of the Atlanta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Miss Julia McKinely, and Mrs. Martha Berrien Duncan. The fountain basin was erected in 1916 as a gift of Mrs. Joseph Madison High.
IAS files contain 1984 excerpt from Atlanta Magazine; and excerpt from "Office Guide to Atlanta," compiled by the Atlanta Convention and Tourist Bureau, c. 1926, pg. 54, discussing the original fountain.
