    Remarks:
Henry Bergh (1811-1888) was the founder and president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and a park commissioner. The provenance of this sculpture is unclear. Although the park commissioners and the ASPCA's names both appear on the fountain, neither has any record of a donation. P. T. Barnum donated the land for the park. It is said that Barnum made this donation as a goodwill gesture, since he was criticized by the ASPCA for his treatment of animals.
