Description:
Installation which consists of a four-story high granite wall structure composed of 93 highly polished panels. A computer-operated mechanism rotates the structure and directs mirrors to reflect sunlight through sixteen astronaut's names which are cut through the stone. The structure rotates and tilts to maintain a constant position in respect to the sun. The fixed mirror assemblies on the back of the structure collect and focus the sun's light through the clear letter inserts in the names. The letter inserts are designed to redirect the light towards the viewer. The highly polished surface of the granite reflects the sky, thereby suspending the brightly lit astronauts' names among images of clouds. The control panels of the structure are electrically powered and gear driven. A smaller commemorative "mission" wall, also sheathed in granite but fixed in place, terminates a walkway that extends back at an angle from the main structure. The memorial stands on a small rise next to a lake, with a ramped walkway leading up to it.
