Levi L. Barbour (1840-1925) was a wealthy civic-minded lawyer who left $20,000 with the city of Detroit for beautifying Belle Isle Park. In 1934, the City Plan Commission, Arts Commission, and Parks and Boulevards started the process of selecting a site for the Levi Barbour Memorial, and in 1936 a jury selected Marshall Fredericks, and a contract was awarded in 1936. The total cost of the memorial was $26,000. For further information see Dennis Allen Nawrocki's "Art in Detroit Public Places," Detroit, MI: Wayne State University, 1980, pg. 74.
