    Description: 
    This fountain is an adaptation of the Ciborium in St. Marks Basilica in Venice and it consists of four columns supporting four arches, which are surmounted by a sharply pitched triangular roof. The rectangular design of the fountain accommodated the placement of ice in a system of coils.

    Remarks: 
    Governor John Judson Bagley's will provided $5,000 for the creation of a public drinking fountain. The executors of the will specifically states that Richardson would be the architect. The Council of Detroit first ordered ice to be placed in the fountain on June 23, 1887. The fountain was relocated on July 3, 1926. It was closed from June 4, 1937 through 1956, and operated sporadically from 1959 until 1983. The fountain was designated a Detroit historic landmark on July 2, 1974.
