Remarks:
Gift of the Gardiner family, the sculpture commemorates Lion Gardiner, an English soldier and engineer who came to Saybrook in 1635. He was hired by John Winthrop to design the town and to build a fort to protect settlers from Indian attacks. Fort Saybrook was the first fortification in Connecticut. The sculpture was moved within the site when the area was made into a park in 1984. The base was repaired in 1987. This sculpture is the last work completed by William Ordway Partridge. IAS files include the text of nearby commemorative plaques and related articles from the Old Saybrook Gazette, March 1, 1984 and the Hartford Courant, April 18, 1984.
