    Remarks:
The statue depicts Benito Jaurez (1806-1872), Mexico's first president of Indian descent, who led the war of independence against Emperor Maximillian. Juarez fought for constitutional government, abolition of the independent power of the military and the clergy, and redistribution of the church's vast land holdings.
The statue was a gift from Mexico, in exchange for San Diego's gift of a Humberto Peraza bronze likeness of President Lincoln (destined for Tijuana's Paseo de los Heroes). The original low base planned for the Juarez statue was redesigned (at the request of the Mexican Government) to be a larger five foot pedestal. The City of San Diego funded the new pedestal, which cost approximately $10,000. IAS files contain full transcription of base text and copies of related articles in San Diego Union dated June 19, 1981; San Diego Tribune, June 21, 1982; and San Diego City Scape, Spring/Summer 1981.
