The statue was commissioned by the Governor of Puebla (Mexico) Dr. Alfredo Toxqui Fernandez De Lara, after Governor Dolph Briscoe (Texas) expressed a desire for a joint memorial to commemorate Mexican hero Zaragoza.
Description:
Portrait of General Ignacio Zaragoza, in full military uniform. He stands with proper right foot forward. His proper right hand rests near a sword strapped on his proper right hip. He is dressed in a knee-length coat with brocaded shoulders and a sash at the waist. He wears eyeglasses. The sculpture is mounted on a main base composed of concrete with a wood-like texture and a sub-base faced with 4 x 4 inch granite squares.

Remarks:
Zaragoza was born near La Bahia, Mexico in 1829 before the area became part of the State of Texas. Nearby bilingual sign reads: GENERAL IGNACIO ZARAGOZA/1829-1862/HERO OF CINCO DE MAYO/Su victoria sobre el/ejercito invasor frances/en la Batalla de Puebla,/5 de Mayo de 1862,/inspiro al pueblo/ mexicano en su larga/lucha por derrocar al/regimen foraneo del/Emperador Maximiliano./ His victory over the/invading French army/at the Battle of Puebla,/May 5, 1862, inspired/the Mexican people in/their long struggle to/overthrow the foreign/rule of Emperor/Maximilian.
The sculpture was shipped from Mexico; the base was constructed by State of Texas employees. IAS files contain a related excerpt from "The History and Heritage of Goliad County," pg. 133; and two pamphlets, "Goliad: A Place to Remember" and "Presidio La Bahia."
