A conflict of the past that should teach us lessons for the future. Description:  An obelisk Subject:  History -- United States -- Battle of Liberty Place History -- Louisiana Object Type:  Obelisk Sculpture Owner:  Administered by City of New Orleans, Department of Property Management, 1300 Perdido Street, City Hall, Room 5W01, New Orleans, Louisiana 70112 Provenance:  Formerly located Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana until 1993. Formerly located New Orleans, Louisiana until April 24, 2017. Remarks:  The memorial was erected in 1891 to commemorate the Battle of Liberty Place, an 1874 riot between members of the White League and African Americans. The monument listed the names of the White League members who died in the fight, but until recently did not list the names of African Americans who died in the fighting. Inscription plaques were later added to temper the original significance of the memorial. In 1989, when the memorial was temporarily removed during street repairs, civil rights groups argued unsuccessfully to remove the memorial. The memorial was relocated in 1993 to a site near where the original battle took place. On April 24, 2017 the monument was removed. One of four New Orleans Civil War era monuments removed in the spring of 2017 under a 2015 City Council vote. References:  Inventory staff, 2002.
