    Description: 
    The painting illustrates a gruesome scene from Germany's invasion of Belgium in which civilian noncombatants were killed in villages all over Belgium. Here, a large group of men and women, including nuns and priests, are grouped together in the center of the painting, some figures lie dead on the ground, others pray, and others cover their faces. On the right side of the painting, the arm and leg of a German soldier can be seen, a bloody sword held out in the soldier's hand. In the background dark clouds of smoke roll in from the right.
