Chief Tarramugus and his father, Chief Sowheag were key figures in the development of Wethersfield in the early 1600's. Chief Sowheag was leader of the Wongunk Indians when settlers from MA came to the Wethersfield area in 1634. Tarramugus, who became chief in 1664, is known for his signature, a hatchet mark or bow and arrow, that appears on land deeds from that period.
