Remarks:
The statue replaces one originally built in 1936 or 1937 as part of the Works Progress Administration and depicts the westernmost spot of Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto's travels and the place where he battled Indians in 1541. The original statue was made of sheet metal over concrete and was a gift from an Oklahoma oil company. It fell during a rain storm in 1988. The idea for a replacement statue originated with the Caddo Indian Monument Restoration Group, with $15,000 funding provided by the Arkansas Arts Council. The replacement statue was made by Guy Tillman with four CETA apprentices as assistants. It was cast at Henderson State University with assistance from Joe Coulter. IAS files contain full plaque text; a copy of the dedication program; and related clippings from Arkansas Democrat, Feb. 3, 1980, pg.B1; and Sentinel Record, Nov. 24, 1979, pg. 3.
