Remarks:
The sculpture was erected with a $5,000 appropriation from the State of California and a gift of $500 from the Massasoit Tribe of Red Men of Fairfield. Francisco Solano, whose Native-American name was Sem Yeto, was chief of the Suisun Indians. As an adolescent Sem Yeto was captured by the Spaniards and taken to Mission San Jose where he was baptized. Later, Solano was given a land grant of Suisun Rancho where he built a home and employed displaced members of the Suisun tribe. The sculpture was originally installed in Suisun and later moved to Fairfield. Around 1984 the sculpture was completely painted. The paint was then removed by scraping the surface of the sculpture with pennies. IAS files contain an article from the Solano Historian (May 1986): pg. 5-10.
