    Owner:
Located 2852 McElderry Road, Munford, Alabama
    Remarks:
Commissioned by the daughter of Colonel McElderry and dedicated ca. 1900. The image is a copy after a painting of Chinnabee Selocta (d. 1835) by Charles Bird King, which reportedly hangs in the Corcoran Galley, Washington, D.C. Selocta fought in the Indian Wars on the American side and later became scout, guide and interpreter for Andrew Jackson. In 1992, the Talladega County Historical Association enlarged the concrete slab, to protect the site from grave robbers. Other spellings of the sitter's name include Chennuby, Chennube, Chenaby and Sarlolta Fixico Chenubby. IAS files include a related article from the Daily Home (Sylacauga, Alabama), Oct. 13, 1984. For related reading, see "Historic Trails of Tallagega," by Grace I Jamison,(Montgomery, AL: Paragon Press, 1956) and "Fascinating Talladega County," by R. F. Blackford, (Talladega, AL: Brannon Printing Company, n.d.).
