The painting depicts two Motolone Indians facing to their left in the foreground, at the edge of a river. One figure is standing, looking down at the water, and clothed in red loincloth. Behind him, the other is seated, also looking down, clothed in a red and white striped garment. In the background are three large tree trunks. Farther back is a group of four Indians, two standing and two seated on the river bank, also in red and white clothing. In the far distance there is dense forest.

The owner's father was a boyhood friend of Mr. Deming's sons Willard and Hall, and knew Mr. Deming well. The painting was a gift from the artist.
