Remarks:
The sculpture was erected in memory of the settlers from Bukovina, Austria who immigrated to the area, beginning in 1886. The sculpture was donated by the James C. and Alberta E. Wolf family, who operated the Kansas Granite and Wolf Memorial Company. The memorial is designed from a rendering drawn by Karen Sauer. The sculpture was dedicated during the Fifth Annual Bukovinafest. IAS files contain copies of the Bukovina Society of the Americas' newsletter, The Bulletin, 8 (Spring 1993): pg. 1; and 10 (Fall 1993): pg. 1. IAS files also contain a brochure from the Bukovina Society of America and a transcript of a talk given to the Ellis County Historical Society dated June 9, 1993. Both give a detailed history of the Bukovina Germans who immigrated to the Ellis area. For related information see: The Bulletin, vol. 9 and vol. 11. For additional information see: Irmgard Hein Ellingson's "The Bukovina Germans in Kansas: A 200 Year History of the Lutheran Swabians," Hays, Kan.: Fort Hays State University, c1987.
