HE SHALL GROW LIKE THE CEDAR OF LEBANON. THEY THAT ARE PLANTED IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, SHALL FOURISH IN THE COURTS OF OUR GOD. (Also inscribed on west and east doors)
Description:
Three bas-relief doors and related panels. Above the west doors is a panel with the coat of arms of Pope John XXIII above the figure of Jesus calling Peter and Andrew to preach the gospel. On the left of the two doors comprising the west doors is a depiction of martyrs witnessing to their faith during Nero's persecution, and on the right door of the set is a depiction of the bestowal of the sacrament of confirmation. Above the center doors is represented the adoration of the lamb of God in heaven, flanked by panels depicting a palm tree and a cedar tree. On the left of the two doors comprising the center doors is a depiction of the ascension of Jesus into heaven, above a representation of a canonization in St. Peter's. On the right door of the set is an image of Mary above a depiction of Jesus freeing St. Joseph from Limbo. Above the east doors is the coat of arms of Archbishop Henry J. O'Brien above a depiction of three children of God in the fiery furnace. On the left door of the two doors comprising the east doors is a depiction of Judas Maccabaeus ordering a sacrifice for the 12,000 slain in battle. On the right door of the set is a depiction of Jesus bidding the widow of Naim not to weep. Flanking the center doors are panels with the images of angels.

Remarks:
The cornerstone of Saint Joseph's Cathedral was laid Oct. 3, 1961 and the cathedral was consecrated May 15, 1962. The sculpture was executed in Rome, Italy. Henry J. O'Brien was the Archbishop of Hartford when the cathedral was built. IAS files contain the program for the cathedral's formal opening, "The Cathedral of St. Joseph," Hartford, CT, 1962.
